The Journey Begins at Home

Have you ever thought of travelling the world? We haven't left NZ yet but the journey has already begun!
July 15, 2016

Have you ever thought of travelling the world? Like right now, living in new places, seeing new things and embracing change, it seems like a dream right? In our minds it's a lifestyle just for the young and single, the aged and retired or the wealthy, not for a young married couple with a child and a house full of stuff. In today's society anything can happen and we had heard stories of couples and families selling all their possessions to travel the world. Could the next chapter of our lives be living abroad and working remotely? We had to research and find out more about the possibility!

We spent our nights entering search terms into google such as 'working remotely', 'remote jobs', 'living in Europe/South America/Asia/USA', 'visas for New Zealanders' and then we began to discover many things. The most important factor in travelling I think, is the visa process. The process of obtaining visas are usually complicated or annoying AF. We also discovered new terms such as 'digital nomads', 'expats', 'location independent' and 'unschooling'. These new terms then became our new topics of search. Article after article, site after site we began to understand how achievable building a lifestyle of travel, work and family could actually become a reality for us.

Technically we were already location independent for the last 5 years because Dylan works for himself as a software developer from home. Seeing as though we have no desire to settle down in the foreseeable future, there was nothing holding us down to live in New Zealand.

In fact we are at our most happiest when we spend our spare time together out of the house seeing new things, meeting and talking to people and doing things together that's not in Hamilton. And so we realised that what we thought we'd eventually do one day, maybe in our fourties or our fifties when Lucas had left home, we had already sort of been doing. That is travelling, living and exploring the country we presently reside in. It's just the current country of residence is our home country, New Zealand. So as we prepare to leave our wonderful home land and travel the world we will begin our journey at home, explore our backyard, for we do not know when we will be back. We'll write about it here on this blog that we have created to record our adventures and share all that we've seen and learnt so that others like yourself may be inspired to do whatever it is you want to do!
